And Now for Something Completely Different

This is what learning is. You suddenly understand something you’ve understood all your life, but in a new way.”  Doris Lessing (born 1919)  Awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature

This blog, and Point to Reading itself, will be unlike most any other discussion you will find on reading and education, and what truly helps children learn. With great respect for our teachers and parents who do the best they know how, I don’t think looking for someone to blame is going to solve the problems of education in our country. Parents blame the school system and the schools blame the parents. The rich blame the poor and the poor blame the rich and everybody blames the government. If you are a parent whose child is failing, don’t you really just want somebody to help your child succeed.

It isn’t what we know that gives us trouble, it’s what we know that ain’t so.”  Will Rogers

Every ten years or so the government funds some huge study that tells us they know exactly how to solve our educational problems. Plenty of Presidents have stated they are committed to education and have promised to fix our schools. And yet, things are not changing. In fact, it seems like Every Child is Getting Left Behind.

Do you remember what it was like for you in school? Did you enjoy reading out loud in front of your friends? How about those hours of workbooks and having to memorize lists and rules? I think we are doing something wrong when half of the kids you and I went to school with did not read a single book last year. It’s estimated that four out of five Americans simply don’t like to read. If our schools haven’t figured out how to make education work in the last fifty years, why should we believe they can do it better in the next fifty?

No More Complaining!

And I mean it. Complaining won’t change anything. Point to Reading is about what you can do to make a difference in your child’s life. Right now. Today. The answers are so simple, we will be asking ourselves why we didn’t think of it before. If you are tired of being told to go to meetings, write letters to representatives, and do bake sales, then PTR is for you.

If you agree with what Point to Reading is about, don’t just like this page…tell somebody about it. Share this blog on your social media. Go to www.pointtoreading.com and get the book. After you read it, give it to a friend. Then get a great book and read it with your child the PTR way. It is time we stop waiting for somebody else to come along to rescue our kids. Find out how you can be the one who makes the difference in your child’s life. Go!
